100 Days Are Up: Why So Much Disappointment with JGO's Government?
By Sandra Rodríguez Cotto
After an election, I have the habit of waiting for the new leader to go through their first 100 days in office to assess their management. With Jennifer González, I had the expectation that there would be changes. After all, I have known her for many years, and I thought that everything would fall into place after that political campaign because Puerto Rico cannot afford to waste more time.
Given her 25 years in politics, I thought she would use all that knowledge, experience, and skills to face Puerto Rico's many challenges. But that wasn’t the case—not at all. On the contrary, everything has been a reality show spectacle and propaganda, with her thinking that the people don’t notice.
Now that more than a week has passed since the first 100 days of her administration, I can say without holding anything back that her management has been frankly bad. The lack of action on the issues she promised to address urgently — such as solving the crisis with the electrical grid — questionable decisions like rewarding her in-laws by legalizing constructions that destroy the environment in the natural reserve of La Parguera, or signing the so-called religious freedom law that allows discrimination towards members of the LGBTT+ community, are just a few examples of her mistakes. Defending that her Secretary of State hadn’t filed taxes for two years, or remaining silent in the face of serious doubts from legislators in her own New Progressive Party about the candidate for Secretary of Justice, are just some of those errors.
That’s why I say without hesitation that the first days of her administration have shown a concerning lack of action, questionable decisions, and a surprising disconnection from the country's urgent problems.
